Lessons from a National Sales Meeting

If you’re in sales you know the exquisite pain that is a national sales meeting (NSM). There is joy and happiness at seeing your colleagues, some of whom you only see once a year. There is exhaustion and bleary eyes from the early mornings, late nights, bad food, stale coffee, and usually too many drinks over too many hours. Here are a few tips to surviving an NSM.

  • Work out. Yes, get up early every single morning and work out even if that just means walking a half mile to get a good breakfast and coffee.
  • Pick a night. With hundreds or thousands of people at the event it is easy to get FOMO. Everyone is having fun! I have to have FUN! And, you should. But, pick a night. The rest of the time go to your events and leave when they are over.
  • Learn something. Have a growth mindset and search out something to learn that is outside your circle of influence.
  • Eat “okay”. The days are filled with starches, salty meat, deserts, and more. And, more. Fill your plate with vegetables and then pick a small treat. The salt and starches don’t mix with the late nights, alcohol, and more.
  • Drink water. As often as possible.

I’m reminded of my rules because I didn’t follow MANY of these rules at the NSM I just attended and am feeling the effects. Too much bad food, deserts, and not enough exercise. I did pick my night and learn something!
